Elder Law Month: Honoring and Protecting Our Aging Population

May is recognized nationwide as Elder Law month, a time to raise awareness of unique issues facing older Americans.

As an elder law practice, we feel our role is protecting the elderly’s rights, dignity, and independence.

I have the privilege of working with seniors and their families at some of the most vulnerable and transitional moments in life.  It may be planning for long-term care, managing the complexity of Medicaid eligibility, protecting assets, using Medicare effectively or navigating the health care industry. Elder law touches nearly every aspect of aging with dignity and security.

Elder law month is also a reminder to take proactive steps.  Far too often, families wait until a crisis occurs—after a fall, a diagnosis or a financial emergency.  While we as elder law attorneys are trained to respond to crises, the greatest value often comes through early planning and proactive steps.  Creating a comprehensive elder law plan can help prevent hardships, protect assets, and preserve family harmony, as well as independence.

This May, I encourage everyone to take a moment to consider the elders in your life.  Reach out to your parents, grandparents, neighbors, or clients. Ask the hard questions: Do they have a plan?  Have there been changes in their health or their finances?  Have they reviewed their plans recently?  Are they receiving the care and support that they need? Are they accessing all the available resources to help maintain their independence?

As a society, we are judged by how we treat our most vulnerable members.  Elder law month is a call to action—not only for legal professionals, but for communities, caregivers, and policy makers—to prioritize the well-being and dignity of older adults.

Let us honor this month by advocating for better care, encouraging legal planning, and standing up for the rights of our aging population.
