June 2010

May is designated as Older Americans and Elder Law Month. The Seniors Celebration is an event recognizing our seniors in their month. This was our fourth year. Seniors from all around joined in the celebration on May 8th at the Mall in Hays.

This event gets bigger and better every year! The party kicked off at 9am with a large variety of booth presentations. Bingo and our old time movie theatre opened at 10am. Our theme this year was “Seniors Have Talent,” and our Celebration day proved this to be true.

Things really picked up when Jack Nicholson began playing his bagpipes and walking amongst the many morning visitors. After Jack, the entertainment continued with an impressive Karl Meis playing polka music on the accordion. Then Chet Quance followed by Walt Pennington had the crowd enjoying some sing along songs. Our noon time entertainment was Bob Dreiling singing country and playing the guitar for the many visitors gathering at center stage. After lunch visitors sat around with the Gospel Singers singing old hymns and gospel songs bringing back good memories. Then the Shooting Stars Square Dance Club showed us some moves and had the crowd whooping and clapping. The day of entertainment ended with a wonderful presentation from a group of Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care facility residents joined by Walt Pennington singing songs including Rocky Top.

I want to acknowledge and give a special thanks to this year’s planning committee: Dan Clinkscales, Marie Leiker and myself from Clinkscales Elder Law Practice; Jim Huenergarde, Financial Advisor for Waddell & Reed; Glenna Clingingsmith with the Area Agency on Aging; and Treva Benoit from Cedarview Assisted Living Facility.

Numerous businesses and individuals in the community helped make this day a success. A special thanks goes to Horizon Appliance, Commercial Signs, Enersys, The Hays Mall, Leiker Fence & Supply, Eagle Radio, Hays Daily News, Kansas Senior Times, Hays Recreation Commission, AARP of Hays and AARP of Ellis.

Thank you to all who provided fun and information at their booths and thank you to the many businesses that donated prizes for the registration table and also for bingo.

The goal of Senior Celebration is to promote senior independence and recognize their many accomplishments. Join us next year!
